Oakland is considered one of the biggest contributors to what was called “West Coast Blues”. After the Pullman Porters helped lay the foundation for the black middle class in Oakland, the city began to flourish and Seventh Street became the entertainment and social center for the black community. Big Town Records, owned by Bob Geddins (considered the Godfather of Oakland Blues), was a recording studio located on 7th and Center Street that churned out top hits. Slim Jenkins Supper Club was the place to see and be seen, hosting big-name acts like B.B. King, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Nat King Cole.
